The Wallet Project: An Archive

Updated: Aug 10, 2024

I began the wallet project back in 2019 when someone (I don’t talk to anymore) showed me their wallet. In this archival project, I document, sneak into, more accurately, my friend’s wallets because to me they’re a fascinating ecosystem of our subconscious. Because it is from friend’s who have moved out of their homes/hometowns, it also explores the idea of ‘home.’ and is an attempt to capture the little memories/ideas of it that we carry with ourselves. The photograph of a significant other (or a family/friend) stereotype, the bill from a restaurant you had dinner at 3 and a half months back, a broken button that fell out of your shirt, and probably an assortment of things that we are too lazy or too attached to throw away. Here are a few photos I sneaked into my friends' wallets for:

'A polaroid that I almost forgot to click, a torn half of the poem I wrote with Roshni, basil flowers and rose petals to remind me of power and love respectively, CAA and NRC is obvious, and just a funny munny cutout from a show at Ramoji.'- Parth, 2019

'Explained special relativity to a friend on the tissue. The band is from a pub crawl in London. The 10 rupee note is from the profit we made in a game of Housie. The coupon is from my first conference. The card is a pact a few friends and I made to print "Think abstract" on t-shirts when we were sitting at our fave shady bar.'- Vamsi, 2019

'A DMRC card from when I was travelling in Delhi, photobooth photos with the friend I had a crush on, American currency, traveling cards and receipts from when I travelled in Germany and my pass for the Empire State Building Observatory.'- Aditya, 2019
